Spending a night in the Batoka Gorge is one of the most special experiences in Livingstone, and it saves you on a night's accommodation and food! As the sunsets on the basalt rock, the river drifting pass as you sip on your sundowner drink and enjoy a freshly prepared meal by your team of river guides: this is living. You'll get to run all the best rapids on the Zambezi, such as Stairway to Heaven, Gullivers Travels, Oblivion and the Midnight Diner. Once all the day trip rafts have left, we relax and enjoy being in one of the most stunning places in the world! You may hear fish eagles (Zambia's National Bird) crying in the distance, or see other wildlife, but this is the rafting option not to be missed on your trip to Livingstone.

Adventure Activities

Your Trip. Day One

We'll collect you from your hotel between 7.30 am and 8.30 am depending on your location. Your trip leader will issue you with a drybag for your clothing and explain what is needed (see below) for your trip. We take the short drive to the start point of the rafting and issue you with high float PFD, helmet, paddle and a waterproof pelicase for your camera. After the walk into the gorge, your trip leader will give you a comprehensive safety talk about your trip as well as your guide teaching you on the "art of paddling" as a team. Once ready we spend the next 6 hours running superb warm water rapids under the excellent guidance of your river guide. At a suitable spot along the way, we'll have a floating lunch before taking on some of the best rapids on the trip such as Double Trouble and Oblivion. We'll reach Bobo Camp early afternoon, for some rest and relaxation and a few cold beers, before sitting down to a traditional Braii (Barbeque) in this stunning location. Sleep in your spacious tent, or fall asleep under the stars. Your choice, your holiday.

Your Trip. Day Two

As the sun hits the side of your tent, you'll smell the coffee and breakfast being cooked. As we leave camp, you'll get a wake up call in Morning Shower, our first rapid of the day. We get to the takeout and get to the top of the gorge where cold drinks will be waiting for you. We'll drive you back to your hotel through Songwe Village where you can stop and buy some authentic souvenirs. You'll be back at your hotel by 11am.

Pick Up Point & Time

We will collect you from your hotel around Livingstone between 7.30 and 8.30 am. Your trip leader will issue you with a drybag for your clothes and explain what is needed. We'll have you back by 11am on day two of your trip.

Optional Extras

On groups over 4 guests, we can arrange a spectacular helicopter flight from Moemba Falls back to Livingstone. There will be an additional cost of USD$250 per person. You will then be transferred back to your hotel.

What You Need To Bring With You

Most people have in their possesion everything that is needed for an overnight trip. The following is a list of what we recommend to bring.

Water bottle with carabiner
Sleeping bag (we can hire you one for a small cost)
Swimwear and or board shorts for on the river
T shirt of long sleeved shirt for sun protection
Thermal top in coller months (July, August, November & December)
Camera
Peronal toiletries
Contact lenses/spectacles
Sunglasses with Chums
Sunhat or baseball cap
Change of clothes for camp
River shoes such as Chaco, Keen or Teva
Any medication you are taking
Small pack towel
Head torch/lamp

The Small Print

Minimum Age: 15 years
Maximum Age: None... go for it! Our oldest client was 73 year old Barbara!
Photos & Video: This can generally be purchased after your trip.
All guides are fully certified and trained in river running, first aid and swiftwater recue.
A satelite Phone, comprehensive first aid kit and stretcher are carried on all trips
We strongly recommend Travel Insurance from your home country in the unlikely even you are injured and need to return home.
All clients will be required to sign and indemnity form before they can go on the river.
Please notify us of any dietary requirements whilst booking. Failure to do so may result in your option not being available.

We find most of our clients have in their posession already what is needed for a river journey. We have broken down here the items into what you'll need on the river and in camp. An equipment list of what you will require for your adventure will be sent to you prior to your departure.

River Fashion:

A pair of Chacos or similar sandals. Trainers are also okay.
A pair of River shorts or swimming costume.
Long sleeved business shirt to wear under your life jacket in hot destinations.
A baseball cap for under the helmet to keep sun off.
Wide brimmed sunhat.
Sunglasses.
Chums for fastening your sunglasses to your head.
Nalgene or similar water bottle.
Carabiner for fastening water bottle to your boat.
Thermal Top for cooler destinations. Medium weight - Heavyweight Capilene or polypropylene is the best.
Waterproof sunscreen and lip balm SPF15 minimum.

For evenings and around camp

Lightweight long trousers.
Lightweight Long Sleeved shirt.
Fleece jacket.
Ladies should bring a long skirt or sarong to cover your legs whilst in the company of locals.
Underwear.
Glasses or Contact lenses. Disposable lenses are ideal.
Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap and shampoo.
Forget the cosmetics and hair dryer! But we do suggest moisturizer.
Hand wipes
A 3-season sleeping bag.
Travel Pillow.
Small pack towel.
Headlamp or head torch and spare batteries.
Shoes or boots for wearing around camp and on hikes.
Insect Repellent.
Any medication you may be taking.

Optional Items

Your favourite book or a journal for recording your river memories.
Sketchpad.
Photographic or video equipment. On most expeditions we provide a waterproof pelicase for these items. We recommend a cleaning kit as sand gets everywhere. Bring a spare memory card or plenty of film. Also bring spare batteries for your camera.
Waterproof disposable for the "action" on the raft shots.
Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman.
An extra bag to bring back a wooden hippo, a carpet, Thanka or anything else you may purchase on your holiday.
An iPod or other music preferences. We have speakers.

Personal Spending

The only money that you need to bring is for meals in town, souvenirs, DVD, personal items and the beer kitty for the raft trip if you drink. Please remember that many of the countries we visit do offer Credit Card and ATM facilities and for a small charge you can withdraw cash either from your account or Credit Card for convenience.
If you wish to pass on a gratuity to your guide we leave this entirely up to you.
Basically, we advise you to keep things as light as possible, without skimping on the necessities. It is great to bring back a load of goodies for everybody back at home.
